Regional finalists for the 2023 Renewable Energy Challenge announced

The regional finalists for the 2023 Renewable Energy Challenge have been chosen. These climate change champions will be advancing to the national round of the competition where they will pitch to a panel of judges on 18 May 2023, at Enlit Africa 2023 conference.

The 2023 Renewable Energy Challenge regional finalists, in no particular order, are:

From the Eastern Cape:

  • Solar Glow – Walmer High School
  • Changemakers – Walmer High School

From the Northern Cape:

  • Eco Warriors – St Anna Secondary Private School
  • Friendly Footprints- St Anna Secondary Private School
  • Green Queens – St Anna Secondary Private School
  • GBHS – Paballelo Senior Secondary School    

From the Western Cape:

  • Emil Lions – Emil Weder High School
  • Environmentally Friendly Substances – Khanyolwethu Secondary School
  • Green Divas – Diazville High School

A thank you is expressed to the judging panel for their active participation and valuable contributions to the regional judging round. The respective judging panels were made up of members from community groups, local government and municipalities and various interest groups. In the Eastern Cape, judges hailed from Catwalk Youth Development Agency and Masifunde Learner Development. The Northern Cape was represented by members from the Department of Forestry, Fisheries & Environment, Namakwa District Municipality, Mainstream Renewable Power, and Surplus People Project. In the Western Cape, the judging panel welcomed representatives from Contour Enviro Group, Ikamva Youth, Saldana Bay Municipality, Umoya Energy and West Coast Fossil Park.

For the national round of competition, the regional finalists will visit Cape Town where they will embark on a three day programme of educational workshops, site visits at renewable energy institutions and facilities and the final pitch at Enlit Africa conference on 18 May 2023 at the GreenHub between 10:00am – 12:30pm. This climate change initiative is co-funded by the European Union, implemented in partnership with the Friedrich  Naumann Foundation for Freedom, presented by GreenCape and supported by skills development partner WESSA.
