The SA Climate Change Champs is pleased to announce the first edition of the Renewable Energy Challenge (REC) for 2023.

The REC 2023 is a competition that inspires learners to imagine how the use of renewable energy can power up communities – thereby providing practical learning and awareness beyond the classroom. Thus, this competition aims to provide an accessible platform for youth voices on renewable energy to be heard.

The competition is open to Grade 9 – 11 learners at Climate Club host schools in the Eastern, Northern and Western Cape and will run from 23 January 2023 until 31 March 2023. Participants stand the chance to win exciting prizes for their schools as well as the opportunity to embark on excursions and site visits and attend educational workshops during the national heat judging round in May 2023.

Learners will be given the opportunity to showcase their artistic and technical abilities with the focus on a very relevant topic, renewable energy. Here, learners are encouraged to think of a problem affecting their homes, schools and broader communities and develop a solution that shows how renewable energy can solve these issues.

To do this, learners will provide a renewable energy solution that addresses a problem from any of the five categories , as guided by the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, and then select a method to demonstrate their renewable energy solution.

There are five (5) categories for entering:

Food (home cooking & preservation solutions)
Safety & crime prevention
Health & wellness
Sustainable transport & mobility
Green building & home solutions
While the methods are:
